Peace Sign
Part 5 of the dysautonomia series will be coming up shortly. This post is about something that happened today that I thought was really interesting.
When you read the title “Peace Sign”, you probably think of this familiar symbol, right?

Did you know that this peace sign was developed in the latter part of the twentieth century? Did you know that another peace symbol preceded this one by quite a bit? Did you know this other symbol has been used to represent peace dating back to ancient times? What is this peace symbol I am referring to?
The dove.

You can learn more about doves and peace symbols here: peace symbols and doves.
What prompted all of this talk about peace symbols? A white dove sat on top of our house for many hours today starting in late afternoon. It is now long since dark outside. The last we checked the white dove was still sitting on our roof!
My husband spotted it while outside and called inside to tell me. I grabbed the camera and hurried outside.
Here is what I first saw when I got outside…

Then I got a little closer…

Then I decided to walk around to the other side of the house to see if I could get a better angle there…

Pictures from the other side of the house:

Check this out. I swear it was like the dove was posing for me. It spun around as if to say, “you’re welcome to take my picture”…

Last but not least, this picture is for Jannie Funster…

Jannie recently shipped me some wood for my wood stove as blogged about HERE. I figured she should be able to see the chimney of the wood stove that will be burning her thoughtful wood shipment. (Jannie, I know you are getting ready for your trip and may not see this before you go but it will be here when you get back).
In any event, I thought it was pretty cool that we had a white dove sitting on our house today. I am going to take that as a sign of peace.
I thought this would be a good place to post this picture:
Sign from Native American Dance and Music Festival I recently attended…

I plan to post more pictures from the festival at some point in the future. It was wonderful.
Postscript:
This post was written last night. I was too tired to proofread and publish it. Now, this morning… the dove is STILL sitting on the top of our house!! Have you ever heard of such a thing? I must say that I am enjoying having a symbol of peace sitting on top of my house.

how absolutely wonderful for you
) I just love it when things like this happen! The morning of my last lap we got up at 5am and Tim shouted up the stairs for me to look outside… lo and behold on our front lawn was a little muntjac deer (you never get deer on your lawn in little old England but there he or she was!) I looked up the meaning of deer in my Native American Medicine Cards book but I forget what it said, only that it was very fitting!! I am not a religious person at all (although Tim told me the other day that I seem to be trying to be one and failing because my inherent faith seems to always battle with an organised religion)… but I am (as in my last lot of brackets) incredibly aware of a greater power, whatever that may be (I personally think it’s everything – every concept of God, Spirit, Nature, Life, whatever)… anyway my point being (not to turn this comment completely on its head with random thoughts) that it’s at times like this when I wonder how people can have no belief at all… because at times like this I can’t help but be amazed at how doves and deer come into our lives just when we need them and give us exactly the message and hope we need. (I hope you didn’t read this post as being “preachy” or “pushy” I don’t think anyone *should* believe anything, only that I find it hard to imagine not believing in *something* at times like this, whatever that something may be for each individual.) Hmmmm I feel I have gone off track somewhere along this comment so I’m going to back away slowly and quietly…
In other words, darling Jeanne, I am so chuffed that the dove has come to visit you at this time xx
Thinking of you x

Amanda,
That dove really was something. It’s just not something you see every day! That’s great that you got to see deer (on laparoscopy day, no less) when that normally doesn’t happen where you live in England. (You’d love my yard. We get deer all the time).
Don’t worry. I know you are not preachy or trying to impose your beliefs on others. I understand what you were trying to say. Regardless of what religious beliefs one has (if any), I think that moments like these are special.
As far as symbols are concerned, I am not a superstitious person at all… but it’s hard not to see a white dove sitting on your house for hours on end as a sign of some sort. I choose to view the dove as a sign of peace. So I enjoyed seeing it yesterday. It was amazing when we kept going back outside to check and it was still there!
You’re funny (“backing away slowly and quietly”).
Please educate me. What is “chuffed”? Much as I can guess from context… we don’t use that term in the U.S., so I’m curious as to the definition. It’s always nice to hear from you, Amanda. Also, it doesn’t surprise me that a “nature post” would resonate with you. I know how much you love nature!
Thinking of you too.

Oh I’m glad my comment came over the way it was meant
)
chuffed… hmmm I cannot find a good definition of it to quote especially as most seem to describe it as being proud of oneself for something achieved and that was not the exact way I meant it. I just asked Tim about it, because often the things I say (coming from the north of England) are completely misunderstood or have a slightly different meaning to the people here in Cambridge (the South)… let’s not even start with pronounciation (I had an elderly gentleman the other day ridiculing me about the way I said Bath “it’s Barth, not Bath… say it properly, go on, say it *properly*”… all I could do was smile sweetly and decline, darn “customer is always right policy!”) Anyway (I seem to be very random-thoughts-in-brackets today!!)… Tim said he would use “chuffed” to mean proud of oneself but I, from the north, use it to mean I am especially pleased/excited about something… like you could be “chuffed” if your child did something for the first time (I guess that is proud too, let me think of another example…) you could also be “chuffed” if someone gave you a gift that was really “you”, that they had put loads of thought into… like a homemade gift that is priceless to you but means nothing to someone else. So, for you seeing that dove, I feel chuffed for you!
I hope that makes sense?!

Amanda,
I knew what you meant. As far as random thoughts, they are always welcome.
As far as the customer trying to correct your pronunciation when the pronunciation varies from one region of England to another, it’s unfortunate that he tried to bully you into pronouncing it the way he says it. Who does he think he is? I’m sorry he ridiculed you.
As far as “chuffed” is concerned, thanks for clarifying what it means. Yes, it makes sense.

A good omen indeed to have a white dove hanging about on your home.
I have long heard of the dove as the symbol for peace. In places in Asia you can frequently purchase Doves to release as a symbol of “peace”, I won’t mention the downside to this profiteering. As well, at quite a few weddings they will often release doves as well as a sign of luck for the happy couple. Let’s just hope that the doves don’t get too excited and release their excitement on the new couple!

Great photos, and how sweet the dove let you admire him/her for so long.

Melissa,
Yes, I like to think of it as a good omen.
Jeanne
Jasmine,
Thanks. I was amazed that it stayed up there for hours and hours!
Jeanne
How cool is that???

Alicia,
It’s very cool… especially in light of the fact that the last time I checked (tonight) the dove was still on the roof!
