Amanda,

I just emailed you pictures of a sign I saw that said POSSIBILITIES. Given your word of the year, I took a couple of pictures of the sign figuring you might like it. ;)

Dorian,

Thank you for directing me to your post from the outset of 2008... which has clearly stood the test of time. It was fantastic... but then I think all of your posts are fantastic!

It sounds like we're on the same page regarding New Year's resolutions. ;)

Your mum's quote is awesome. I see where you get your way with words. I love all of your quotes. (Wait a minute. Your mum texts you? Wow)...

Your word of the year MOVE is certainly appropriate given your situation! I hope you are able to complete phase two of your move ASAP!!!

You have the best quotes! Thank you for expending the precious time and energy to comment here when I know you are very sick and unable to do much online right now.

I wish I could do something, anything to make you feel better!!!!!

Take care and I'm thinking of you!

Jeanne

Not that my intention is to pimp my own blog here but, er, uh, well; I wrote about exactly this, or at least the issue of resolutions & calendar years, at the outset of 2008..

Two thousand infinity ?

Honestly, it's worth clicking thru for the Calvin & Hobbes alone. Moreover, as I explain in my post, I'm not inspired by a new calendar year necessarily but do seek new beginnings wherever possible (not to mention needed ::heehee::). This year, me mum summed up that current need perfectly, having texted the following on New Year's:

"A sense of purpose is essential when trying to meet the coming year, and leave a sad & difficult one behind, taking only the good from it. It requires a lot of deep reflection & determination with serious prayer."

She was responding to my quotationaries for the occasion:

"If we take care of the moments, the years will take care of themselves." -- Maria Edgeworth (may we build on last year's happiest moments in the year to come)

"And now with purpose, full & clear, we turn to meet another year." -- Robert Browning (tisn't what you do at midnight but in all the moments to come that matters)

We're determined to establish lives truer to ourselves this year; thus, her follow-up text:

"It's a brand new day in a brand new year. Make even one small move in the direction you wish to travel. And then another. I will too. And in time we will meet because our paths lead toward each other! We just need to keep moving. Love is like a magnet."

Maybe our word for the year is MOVE!? Mine sure is! I hope she inspired you as much as she did me for she confirms what I've long held -- that individual "resolutions" are not nearly as powerful as mutual goals. Let's all work together, shall we?

(|_|*ch33rs*|_|)
"I find hope in the darkest of days & focus in the brightest. I do not judge the universe." -- Dalai Lama (let no day be a deterrent, always make a positive move)

PS: I send out quotationaries dailyish so just say so if you'd like to get them.

Amanda,

You have wonderful insights year-round. I know you spend lots of time analyzing things and tweaking things year-round. You've described it nicely on your blog in the course of time I've been reading it (many months). I love the way you describe things. Yes, I'd have to agree with you about it being easier to think clearly in cold weather. Despite the fact that conditions like fibromyalgia and Raynaud's worsen my symptoms with the cold temperatures, I think that I think better when it's colder too. In the summer, my heat intolerance (including fainting) makes me feel so sick in so many ways. I've always said I'll take snow over that anytime. The heat really messes with my thinking. I may have instances of fibro-induced brain fog here and there when it's cold... but when it's hot out, my brain really is severely affected. I do not function well in the heat at all. (When you're spending all of your energy on staying conscious, not standing up too fast, staying out of the sun, drinking enough water, etc., it's hard to think straight about anything else). Unfortunately, my neuropathy makes walking a whole new ball game. I used to walk regularly for exercise prior to the neuropathy but not anymore. My feet say "no". I know what you're saying, though. I used to love a nice walk on a winter's day.

Best of luck to you and Tim with the move. That is very exciting you'll be able to cut your hours at work. I know you have struggled with that. Reducing your hours will most likely help you feel better because I know you have felt you were pushing your body past its limits at times. Best of luck with your book. Possibility is an excellent word! Happy 2010!!

Thank you, Amanda. Here's to a year of possibility for you and Tim! :)

What great words!! It's funny but there are a couple of points in the year when I feel things start anew every time they hit, but that still doesn't stop me making changes and resolutions at other times if the need or desire hits me. New Year is one of them... once Christmas Day is over I look forward to starting a brand new year with hope, every year hope of what the year may bring... and September and the beginning of autumn is the other time. I think this one goes back to my many years in education and the new year beginning, but symbolically seeing the trees shed their leaves reminds me of letting go of things and a time of quiet contemplation, especially as I find it much easier to think clearly in the colder weather - have you ever noticed that a walk on a cold, winter's day clears the mind as well as the sinuses?

2010 is going to be a big year for Tim and me - we are moving back to my hometown so we can both buy a house and I can cut my hours at work . I am excited about the effects this will have on my health and wellbeing and also the extra time it will bring me to realise my dream and get this book of mine well and truly written, now that I finally believe I have the ability to do so. It is a year of possibility for us, so I guess that is our key word!

Here's hoping you have a truly peaceful year you deserve it xx

Jannie,

You ought to know all about being a dear, dear, dear sweet friend. After all, it's your specialty.

Alicia's love of orange is infectious, isn't it? I think it's a cheerful color. I think spreading cheer facilitates healing. So, I say "bring on the orange". ;)

I LOVE your word for 2010. GIVE is an excellent word! It's also a perfect word for you... because you consistently give so much to others year-round!

Aviva:

Happy New Year! My step-mother-in-law is Jewish; we celebrate both Christmas and Chanukah. So, I'm familiar with the Rosh Hashana schedule through her. Yes, spring can also seem like a new start. For those of us living in geographical areas with four distinct seasons, I think each season can bring about a change of mindset or awakening of some sort. I think there are many events that can act as a catalyst for reflection and introspection. No, I don't think you're rambling at all. I think you make a good point that there are many times of year that can trigger us to self-examine. I agree with you... I too hope that the new year brings better health, less pain, lower costs, and much happiness for all! ;)

alohamorakat:

Happy New Year to you too! I'm glad you liked it. I absolutely LOVE your word of the year for 2010: HEALTH! ;)

Heidi:

I'm glad you liked it! I have to give Alicia (who wrote the post 2010=HOPE) credit because without her post, this one would not have happened. Her post was really what got my wheels turning. Her post about hope being her word of the year was what got me thinking on the path that wound up becoming this post.

The part about holidays and birthdays in general is something I have said for years. I have seen too many people get really tense and worked up over holidays and birthdays and I just don't feel like I have enough energy to go to that place.

Like you and your husband, I don't dislike holidays. I just don't get frantic over them. I used to get much more "carried away" in my younger years. I spent too much money on gifts I really couldn't afford and lost sight, to a degree, of why I was doing what I was doing.

It is much more peaceful not obsessing over details the way I did years ago. For me, it's very liberating to let go of that pressure, actually. The true meaning of holidays is often lost in the hubbub, I think, for many people.

I like the "English holiday" idea. :) Please don't feel you have to "admit" to celebrating birthdays as if there is anything wrong with that! Don't get me wrong.. We celebrate birthdays at my house (just watch my latest video if you'd like to see what Hubby got me recently for my birthday that made me smile)! Simple but very appreciated! We just try not to turn it into a week-long carnival atmosphere... if you know what I mean. I think it's great to celebrate our loved ones (that includes pets!)

Yes, Alicia's yearly word idea is outstanding, isn't it? While I very happily took the "peace" idea she suggested for my word, "health" would have been a close second. As you can see above, alohamorakat was wise enough to claim that word!

I think it would be wonderful if you choose a word that works for you. There are so many words too choose from, huh? You'll find the one that resonates with you! Let me know when you do because I look forward to reading your post.

I miss you on Twitter. While we only interacted there briefly before I left, I enjoyed chatting with you there. Have you read my many posts about the Twitter impostor situation and online identity theft (including one posted just the other day)? Just see my left sidebar under "Why I Left Twitter" under Navigation. There are lots of insightful comments people posted as feedback to those posts. I highly recommend checking them out. Internet security is so important!

Hugs to all on your end too. That means all four-legged animals need to line up for their Heidi hugs. It's nice to hear from you. Take care! ;)

Happy New Year! My step-mother-in-law is Jewish; we celebrate both Christmas and Chanukah. So, I’m familiar with the Rosh Hashana schedule through her. Yes, spring can also seem like a new start. For those of us living in geographical areas with four distinct seasons, I think each season can bring about a change of mindset or awakening of some sort. I think there are many events that can act as a catalyst for reflection and introspection. No, I don’t think you’re rambling at all. I think you make a good point that there are many times of year that can trigger us to self-examine. I agree with you… I too hope that the new year brings better health, less pain, lower costs, and much happiness for all!

Happy New Year to you too! I’m glad you liked it. I absolutely LOVE your word of the year for 2010: HEALTH!
