This post was updated on 11/3/2008. THANK YOU to Ruth McFarland of Cision for helping the endo cause by signing our awareness & education petition! Below are emails I exchanged with her (printed with permission) about this post and about the “Dancing with the Stars” press on endometriosis. Dear Ms. McFarland,

Thank you for your thoughtful comments! I really appreciate it!

Do you know of ANY way I can get the word out to more people about the petition I have created for creating awareness & education about endometriosis??

I would like to submit the petition to Oprah and “The View” by the end of this week.

Women are posting comments on the petition quite literally BEGGING me to get it into the right hands. I feel a big responsibility to do everything I can!!

I posted about this topic again today. I have gotten people from The U.S., the UK, South Africa, & Puerto Rico on the petition so far. Their comments are inspirational and HEARTBREAKING at the same time!

If it’s OK with you, I’d like to post your email to me in the comment section to the Cision post I wrote. I will do just about anything to get the word out about endo right now. Even if that means appearing immodest. Whatever will gain credibility for the endo cause, I will pursue…

Thank you again!

Ms. McFarland,

**THANK YOU** for featuring my blog!! I really appreciate it. I don’t know where Cision found my blog (or how you decided to feature it) but I’m very glad you did list it here:

I urgently need some help to get information out to the public following a week of misinformation…

With Julianne Hough and Lacey Schwimmer of Dancing with the Stars having been diagnosed this week with endometriosis, we have an opportunity to educate the public about this life-altering illness!

Here is the petition I have started. I am circulating as widely as possible in an effort to get widely viewed show such as Oprah or “The View” to do a segment on endometriosis.

Tens of millions of viewers last week heard misinformation about endometriosis.

Here is the note I have been sending out to everyone and anyone in an effort to gather as many online signatures as possible by the endo of next week. I plan to send the petition to Oprah and to “The View” requesting that they provide a forum for endo patients and reputable doctors to speak out about endometriosis… thus giving the public high quality information as opposed to misinformation.

Unfortunately, it seems from reports that one physician who treats both Julianne Hough and Lacey Schwimmer (each of Dancing with the Stars) is not following standard practices for diagnosis and these two women appear to be unknowingly spreading misinformation to the public in their many interviews simply by quoting their own doctor.

Endometriosis has been swept under the rug for far too long. The rare times it’s in the media, there is often confusion or misinformation involved. I feel I have a duty to do everything in my power to get the word out to the public about what endo is, how it is diagnosed, what treatment options are available, etc.

If there is a way to get mainstream media to cover endometriosis in a responsible way, I would be more than thrilled!! I have had endometriosis for 26 of my 39 years and can’t bear to sit by and watch millions of TV viewers become misinformed about endometriosis.

Here is the note I have been sending out requesting petition signatures online:

Please take approximately 2 minutes to sign this petition and help patients’ lives!

Approximately 5.5 million women and girls in North America have endometriosis. An estimated 89 million worldwide have it. Yet it remains “under-the-radar”. The general public is largely unaware of it or misunderstands how debilitating it can be.

With Julianne Hough and Lacey Schwimmer of Dancing with the Stars having been diagnosed this week, we have an opportunity to educate the public about this life-altering illness!

Endometriosis can only be diagnosed via a surgical procedure called a laparoscopy.

Let’s Create Endometriosis Awareness & Understanding!

Please sign here:

I would greatly appreciate your help in getting the word out! I’m hoping to contact Oprah and “The View” by late next week. Endo is in the news right now with both (see above) Dancing with the Stars dancers being diagnosed within days of each other.

Now is the time to “seize the moment” and get accurate info disseminated to the public.
