Dorothy,

I am so sorry for your sister Marge's pain. It is terribly unfortunate that she lost her bladder. I'm so sorry for her continuing problems with the bag leaking, etc. It really is important to get a proper diagnosis and to get proper treatment. You're right. That can't be stressed enough.

My interstitial cystitis symptoms began in 1992... 17 years ago. So, I am very familiar with the lack of knowledge doctors had about it then. Sadly, I have seen little improvement since in the medical community. I am very fortunate to have found a doctor who really understands interstitial cystitis. The three doctors (all urologists) preceding this one told me I didn't have IC, gave me prescriptions for overactive bladder (not helpful), and even gave me other prescriptions that aggravated the symptoms.

Through a combination of bladder instillations and oral medication, my IC symptoms are much improved. Yes, I still have flare-ups occasionally (such as now). However, the improvement is impressive.

I like to get the word out to people that there IS hope and that there ARE doctors out there who understand how to diagnose and treat IC. It took me 4 cystoscopies with hydrodistention but I finally got the right diagnosis and the relief from proper treatment for IC is amazing. The 12 years of unnecessary suffering was terrible but I am grateful for the improvement in symptoms I've had since diagnosis in 2004.

Best wishes to your sister and I am really sorry for everything she has been through! She is lucky to have you in her corner.

Blessings to you and your readers too...

My sister Marge is 62 and had that horrible problem when there wasn't much known about it over 15 years ago and they removed her bladder said it was so abused she would have died if they didn't get it out of her...Since then she's had a bladder bag, which the seals and bags often leak and she's always in fear of a breakdown besides the soreness on her skin most of the time..I could go on and on and there is little to do about it. Thus you can't stress enough to everyone who might have this problem to get to a doctor as soon as possible so as not to lose their bladder and have the bag.

Blessings to you and your readers...
